How much do heat pumps cost in Ireland?
What is an air to water heat pump?
Air to water heat pumps come in 2 parts:
the condenser and the air collecting outside unit.
In theory the process is simple, the outside air collector brings the air to the condenser and then the condenser, condenses the heat and then distributes the heat around your building.
Unlike geothermal ground source heat pumps that require pipes to be laid to collect the heat, air source heat pumps collect the heat from the ambient air outside requiring no pipes to be laid and then they can connect to your existing heating distributing system. This makes air source heat pumps the pump of choice for those who don't have access to ground to lay the pipes.
Here are some of the benefits of using an air to water heat pump:
1. They are cheaper than you think compared to other systems making air to water heat pumps very cost effective.
2. Ideal for any property that does not have access to an area to lay pipes.
3. Unlimited source of heat to condense taken from the outside air.
4. Low maintenance compared to other systems.
If your home is well insulated then an air to water heat pump can be very cost effective compared to any other heating system. But if your insulation is not at the required level of a minimum of a B2 BER then air to water heat pumps can be an expensive way to heat a home. Insulate first.
Air to water heat pump costs
The cost of an air to water heat pump can range from about €2000, if you buy it online, to about €20,000 if you get a large one and get it installed.

Heat Pumps FAQ's
What are geothermal heat pumps and how do they work?
There are two main types of geothermal heat pumps:
1. Closed-loop heat pump: In this type of heat pump, a closed loop of underground pipes filled with a water and antifreeze solution is used to exchange heat between the ground and the building. The water solution circulates through the loop and is pumped through a heat exchanger, where it either releases or absorbs heat, depending on whether the system is in heating or cooling mode.
2. Open-loop heat pump: In this type, the water source is taken directly from a well or a body of water, such as a lake, and is used as the heat source/sink. This water is then discharged back into the same source after it has passed through the heat exchanger.
Both types of geothermal heat pumps work by leveraging the relatively constant temperature of the earth to efficiently heat and cool a building. The ground temperature is used as the heat source in winter and as the heat sink in summer, allowing the system to operate more efficiently than a traditional air-source heat pump. Additionally, because the heat source is underground, the temperature remains stable throughout the year, making geothermal heat pumps a reliable and efficient way to heat and cool a building.
Are heat pumps worth the costs and hassle?
There are pros and cons in putting in a heat pump which we out line below but if you have a airtight property with at least as B2 BER heat pumps are a great idea and a necessary part of the changes we need to make to our lives to combat climate change.
Are there government grants for heat pumps?
Yes there is a SEAI government backed grant for heat pumps.
Ask your contractor for help with the forms, all our contractors are registered with SEAI and can help you apply.

What advantages to using a Heat Pump?
1. Using a heat pump is kinder to the environment, in theory we will all be using electricity generated with renewable energy so it's a far better alternative than continued use of co2 emitting oil, gas and solid fuel.
2. There is little to no maintenance compared to the traditional co2 emitting gas and oil systems.
3. Heat pumps are super efficient with efficiency ratings above 90%
4. Heat pumps are also like air conditioners and can be switched from producing hot to producing cold air should the need arise, in a hot summer having some air conditioning might come in handy.
What disadvantages of using a Heat Pump?
1. Heat pumps are expensive with a large investment required up front.
2. In a property that is not well insulated and airtight, running costs of heat pumps can be very high.
3. In order for a heat pump to be truly cost effective other upgrades to your property will be required, insulation and airtightness mainly.
